• This newsletter is written for the week of November 11th.

We are going to have a Journey's test this Friday.  We are going to read The informational text called "Aero and Officer Mike."

Reading Workshop:    This past week the students were introduced to nonfiction text.  We explored the differences between nonfiction and fiction.  We also started looking at nonfiction text features.  We started with photographs and captions.

Writing workshop:    We took a few days to finish copying our personal narratives.  Each student found a topic to research and teach others about in our nonfiction writing.  We will start putting chapters and subheadings together next week.

Word work:     The spelling pattern for our words this next week is or.

Hawk Time:     We are still switching for "Hawktime."  Our new focus on Hawktime is predicting.  This will be done with a variety of texts.  Your child might have a different teacher working with them at this time.

Math:   This past week we practiced subtracting 3 digit numbers by counting up and expanding and trading.  Next week we will learn how to subtract by trading the traditional way.  When students subtract on a test or quiz, they may use the method that works best for them.

Multiplication Fact Triangles:   Students received fact triangles to take home for 2's, 5's and 10's.  They should be studying these at home.  They should memorize these facts within the next month.

Addition and Subtraction Facts:  Students have been given addition and subtraction fact triangles to study at home.  They should have fact triangles at home.

Free Apps:    Math cards and math fact master: speed math are free apps that can help students study addition, subtraction, mult., and division facts.

Science:     Last week the students loved learning sound.  We will continue learning about sound next week.
