Reading Workshop:     This past week students were learning how to bring their own thinking to new facts that they learned in nonfiction books.  A couple sentence starters they are taught to use are ...

    This makes me think...

    Now I realize...

Writing workshop:      The students are learning the different elements of a persuasive essay.  The students have picked a topic and are writing their essays.  They learned how to write strong leads and give many examples with their reasons.  They have also been talking to their audience and making strong endings among other strategies.    We worked on adding little stories to our reasons to help make them stronger.  We also practiced thinking about what the opposition to our change would say to us and writing that in our essays.

Word work:    Spelling words this week are hard c and soft c.

Hawk Time:     We are still switching for "Hawktime."  Our new focus on Hawktime is IRead practice.  This will be done with a variety of texts.  Your child might have a different teacher working with them at this time.

Math:   This week we practiced some more multiplication strategies along with mult. and div. number stories.  The students also received their last 6 mult. facts.  They have all of them now.  They are working on fact power.

Multiplication Fact Triangles:   Students should know the 2's, 5's, 10's and square facts.  The rest of the 3's and 9's facts should start to be memorized.

Addition and Subtraction Facts:  Students have been given addition and subtraction fact triangles to study at home.  They should have fact triangles at home.  Moby max "fact fluency" is another good place to practice the facts.

Free Apps:    Math cards and math fact master: speed math are free apps that can help students study addition, subtraction, mult., and division facts.

Science:    We have started our economics unit.  We will be continuing this for the next few weeks.  Students are learning about supply and demand and producers and consumers.
