This newsletter is written for the coming week of January 18th.
Reflection Journals: We have been analyzing our work and writing in our journals. I'm very excited about these. I think they are going to help give the students more ownership and pride in their learning. The students are writing goals and also reflecting upon how well they are understanding concepts and standards and what they can do to get better.
Reading Workshop: We started our character unit in reading. The kids wrote down what the main character said and did to learn as much as they could about the character. This is one of the most important things that they can do as a reader. Next week we will do much of the same and use that information to assign character traits to characters.
Stamina - Reading stamina is so important. We are working on getting the kids to read 20 to 30 min. at a time. This will help as the students start testing later this year.
Book Clubs - Students have picked a book for book clubs and are going to start reading the book on Monday. We have been learning how to do them properly. If students do not finish their reading in class, they will be asked to take it home and finish it for their 20 min. of home reading. This will help make sure they are ready to discuss the pages with their group the next day.
Mobymax - Mobymax is a great place for students to get extra practice with phonics patterns, sight words, lang. and reading skills. There is also test prep practice they can do. Mobymax can be accessed through Clever.
Raz Kids - This app is on the Clever. It is a great place for students to do some reading at their own level.
Writing workshop: This past week I taught the students how to complete an informational writing prompt that they will see on ILearn. Next week we will do another one and the students will do a little more on their own and with partners.
Word work: This past week we were doing work with synonyms. We will do the same next week.
Math: We started unit 5 fractions. We were practicing numerators, denominators, basic fractions, and equivalent fractions. Next week we will work more on equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions.Addition and Subtraction Facts: Most students have passed their addition and subtraction facts test. Some students still need to study these. Moby max "fact fluency" is a good places to practice the facts. There are also websites on my Clever page that students can use to help study their facts. I am continuing to give the test on Wednesdays to those that haven't passed.Multiplication facts: Students should be practicing 2's 5's and 10's facts. Every Wed. now I am giving a time test for 2's, 5's and 10's. Most students are now working on their square facts. Other students have moved on to their 3's and 9's.I Know it Math: This is great website to practice all of our third grade skills. It also has a link to other grade skills. The link is on my Clever page under the category "Math Time Tests and Games."
