  • This newsletter is written for the coming week of Feb. 22nd.

       Reading Workshop:    In reading workshop this week the students read their books for their book clubs.  They have been reading and analyzing their main characters.  They have been finding motivations for doing what they do.  They have also been learning the character mountain.  It shows the progression of a character through a story.  Next week we are still going to be reading our book club books and analyzing characters, but we are also going to start our testing strategies unit.

    Mobymax - Mobymax is a great place for students to get extra practice with phonics patterns, sight words, lang. and reading skills.  Mobymax can be accessed through Clever.   

    Writing workshop:   Students were learning how to make Thesis statements and write a strong opening paragraph for our persuasive essays.  We also practiced generating reasons to go with our thesis statement.  We practiced deciding which reasons are the strongest to convince our audience.   Next week we will continue writing persuasive essays.      

    Word work:    Spelling words the week of Feb. 8th are ld, lp, and lt endings.  The students can study their words and patterns on Spelling City if they want.  It is located in Clever.  

     
    Math:     We worked on using mult. strategies to help us find the answers to our more difficult mult. facts.  We will do more of the same next week.  Also we will have a test over Unit 5 on Friday.  
     
    Mult. facts -  All students are practicing their 3's and 9's. Some students are working on their squares and final 6 facts.  Every Wed. I'm giving the students a time test.  They really should start to be memorizing these now.  They should have all of the facts from 1's - 10's memorized in the next couple of months.  After a students passes the 3's and 9's, they will get a prize and then go on to their square facts.  Once those are memorized they will have 3 facts left. 
     
     Addition and Subtraction Facts:  Students have been given addition and subtraction fact triangles to study at home.  Moby max "fact fluency" and "Xtra Math" are other good places to practice the facts.  There are also websites on my Clever page that students can use to help study their facts.
        
     Free Apps:    Math cards and math fact master: speed math are free apps that can help students study addition, subtraction, mult., and division facts.

     Homework - The week of February 22nd
     
    Reading:  Students are asked to read 20 min. each night M - Th and turn in a                            signed reading log on Friday. Students will receive the reading log on Mon. each                        week.  Many reading logs were not filled out last week.  Please remind your child to have these filled out next week.  Thank you.
     
    Math:   

    A homelink or a homework sheet will be sent home Mon. - Thurs.  

     
    IRead:  IRead starts March 8th.  We will be testing on March 9th and 10th at 8:30.  There is a link here to an IRead letter sent out from Noblesville scools.   Random Acts of Kindness Week:

    Random Acts of Kindness Week Donation Drive

    February 16 – February 19

     

    During Random Acts of Kindness Week, the Hazel Dell Shine Squad will be collecting donations for Marilyn’s Place. Marilyn’s Place is a non-food pantry serving the Noblesville community. Hamilton County, Indiana, has the lowest poverty rate in Indiana, somewhere between 3.8 and 5.1 percent. That is 12,730 and 17,085 people in that 3.8 to 5.1 percent.  There are several food pantries throughout Hamilton County however, there was no place or program that provides free clothing, hygiene, and cleaning products. Marilyn’s Place Non-Food Pantry was founded to proudly fill in the gap 52 weeks a year.

     

    We will be collecting items that fit into 4 categories. Please drop off items outside of the main office.  We appreciate your support to our drive and for the benefit of those in need in your community.

     

    • When I See You Smile - Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Mouthwash, Dental Floss

     

    • The Powder Room - Deodorant, Antiperspirant, Body Lotion, Hand Soap

     

    • Shower Time - Body Wash/Bar Soap, Body Lotion

     

    • Put on A Happy Face - Face Cleaner, Shaving Cream, Facial Moisturizer

    Yearbook Forms:  Yearbook forms have been sent home.
     
     
     
    Book Fair Online:  A bookfair flyer was sent home today.
     
     
    Library:   The students will choose books online and then the librarian will bring them down to the room.  Students should have last week's books turned in on Wednesday.
     
     Transportation Changes: If you have any change in transportation, 
    (i.e. - your child normally rides the bus and is a car rider one day for 
    whatever reason).  I need you to please send in a note with your child.  
    I will send this note to the office so that they are aware of the change.
     
     Clever, Sumdog, Epic, Prodigy and Mobymax:   Students have a yellow sheet that they will always keep in their homework folders.  This sheet has login cards and passwords on it.  Right now logins to Clever, Google Docs, Canvas, Sumdog, Epic and Prodigy are on the sheet.    Mobymax is also a great app for students to use to sharpen all skills.  The students have an automatic login to Mobymax through Clever.
