Lightspeed Parent Portal

With so many new technologies and learning methods introduced every day, your involvement in your child’s learning is more important than ever. To support this, your school has partnered with Lightspeed Systems® to give you visibility and control of your child’s internet usage while on school-issued devices, at home and after-school hours.

With the Lightspeed Parent Portal, you have access to:

• The Weekly Student Online Activity Report, sent to your email. This report summarizes your child’s web browsing activity for the week.
• The full, web-based portal delivering in-depth visibility and control over your child’s online activity. 

The Lightspeed Parent Portal is a fully web-based, mobile-responsive portal, so you can easily check your child’s internet activity and take action.

1. If you are a registered contact in PowerSchool, you’ll receive the Welcome to Parent Portal email from: do_not_reply@lightspeedsystems.com. Please check your spam folder if you do not receive it. 
2. Click the “Start using Parent Portal” button to register/create your account.
3. A verification email will be sent to the email address you provided during the registration process to log into the portal.

Once you are in the portal, you may use the drop- down to toggle between students if you have more than one child.

The Lightspeed Parent Portal weekly activity report provides an automated email summary of a student's web browsing history on school-issued devices from the previous week. It typically includes the total pages visited per day and a list of the top 10 most visited websites or hosts.

With the Weekly Student Online Activity Report you’ll see:

• Top Websites: Top 10 visited hosts
• Daily Website Visits: Number of pages visited per day
• Total Browsed Hosts
• Average Daily Page Visits

Control your child’s screen time with automated internet access schedules by day and time, increasing oversight at home.

Each schedule allows you to:

• Select different time blocks for different days of the week
• Choose which grouped categories are allowed or blocked during that window
• Select which custom block lists are active
• Optionally pause internet access entirely

NS already blocks all social media sites. Students in Grades K-5 cannot access YouTube unless content is embedded by their teacher. Students in Grades 6-12 have filtered access to YouTube. If you completely block YouTube at home, you might block your child from using resources they need to complete school assignments.

Please remember that any parental controls already set on a home network will automatically effect NS-issued devices when they connect to the home internet. If you do not currently use parental controls on your network, you can contact your internet provider for instructions on how to turn on that feature.

YouTube includes rich educational content and our district is diligent about monitoring access to ensure your child can access appropriate YouTube content. Even so, your child may be spending too much time on this platform and not getting homework done. With the Lightspeed Parent Portal, you can allow or block access to YouTube after school as needed.

Yes. You cannot pause your student’s web browsing while your student is connected to the NS network (on an NS school campus).

Web Activity

This view provides information on your student's internet activity across sites they visit. This information does not show how long your student was on a site.

Please contact your school administrator with concerns about your student’s internet usage during instructional time.

The Lightspeed Parent Portal’s Allowed/Blocked web activity status allows you to check which websites are permitted and which are restricted according to your school district’s filtering policies. This feature is useful to monitor your child’s online activity and engage in digital citizenship conversations. You can easily filter the results by activity type using the “Allowed” or “Blocked” tabs.

NOTE: Only NS can make changes to the content filtering policies. You will not be able to change the status of an allowed or blocked website from within the portal. 

In some cases, it will appear as if your student visited many pages that you cannot identify as educational. Some of the urls are “noise”, the device might be checking in with “cloud services” or there can be applications running in the background. Here’s an example.Image of status report.

This is also true for some sites that might appear under blocked. The Content Filter blocks any content that it cannot identify the source of or is restricted.

This information is provided to give you insight into your student’s internet activity. We encourage you to have open discussions with your student about responsible internet usage, online safety, and appropriate behavior while using the device.

Please contact your child's teacher or building administration with concerns you may have about your student’s internet usage during instructional hours. Teachers do not have access to the usage reports.

Go to Parent Portal’s Forgot Password page and enter your email address. You should receive an email shortly after with steps to change your password for the Parent Portal.
