Social Emotional Learning
What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. (CASEL) Social and emotional development provides a foundation for learning and enhances students' ability to succeed in school, careers and life.
What Research Says
Numerous studies have shown the benefits of social and emotional learning. Improved academic achievements and improved college and career readiness are both impacted through experiences that promote social and emotional learning. Research shows that SEL boosts student outcomes, including 11% gain in academic achievement. Furthermore, a meta-analysis in 2017 shows a 6% increase in high school graduation rates and an 11% increase in college graduation rates.
