Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Noblesville Schools recognizes that suicide is one of the leading causes of death for Indiana youth.  We believe in partnering with students, families, school staff, and the community to ensure all of the needs of our students are met.  Our school staff are provided with various youth suicide awareness, prevention, and postvention trainings - either via in-person class or online courses approved by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).  Additionally, Youth Mental Health First Aid is made available to staff at least twice per school year. Community/parent/guardian offerings of Youth Mental Health First Aid are being planned. Our school counselors and school social workers receive additional training on screening for student suicide ideation and non-suicidal self-injury (self-harm) and how to refer students and families for support and assistance.  Students in grades 4-12 receive developmentally-appropriate mental health awareness and/or suicide prevention classroom lessons each year. Content includes stress awareness, coping strategies, warning signs of depression, and help-seeking behavior. If a student needs help or is concerned about a peer, he/she can submit the information on the SpeakUp App located on school issued devices for 4th-12th graders.  All students are encouraged to ask for support from a trusted adult, including but not limited to their school's counselor(s) or social worker(s).
