Information for Families
Why participate in Compass Mentoring?
A Compass Mentoring Parent Shares About Their Experience,
"The Compass mentoring program has been an absolute gift for my child! Though he was nervous at first, he looks forward to his mentor visiting, and they’ve even traded some chess strategies. Having a positive male role model in his life has been a blessing!"
And Research Agrees,
Each relationship in a young person’s life can help cultivate life skills and offer support. But, a strong web of multiple developmental relationships enhances opportunities for young people to flourish. Compass Mentoring expands students’ access to these strong developmental relationships.
Research confirms that when young people have strong relationships with trusted adults in addition to their families, they are more able to:
- Overcome challenges
- Engage in school
- Thrive in life
What are Developmental Relationships and Why are They Important?
Search Institute explains that when young people experience developmental relationships in their families, schools, programs, and communities, they are more likely to be resilient in the face of challenges and grow up thriving.
Through developmental relationships, young people:
- Discover who they are
- Cultivate the abilities needed for them to shape their own lives
- Learn how to engage with and contribute to the world around them
Families FAQ

How does Compass Mentoring choose matches?
We want our matches to be the right fit and meaningful, so your student’s voice is heard and valued in the process of choosing their mentor. Conversations between your student and their school counselor or social worker about shared traits and interests are combined with the mentor interview process to form a high-quality match.
-
What do Compass Mentor meetings look like?
Mentors will come to the student's school biweekly for approximately 30-45 minute meetings in a monitored meeting space during their school day. Interactive activities will be individualized to each match relationship as a starting point for story-telling, reflection, goal-setting, and fun!
-
What will communication look like?
Throughout the entire process, we will walk alongside you to form a partnership with the mentor, mentee, and the Compass Mentoring Program. The Mentor Coordinator and Site Coordinators (School Counselors and School Social Workers) will be the primary contact for Mentee Families. Furthermore, there will be an activity at each Compass Mentoring meeting that you can ask your student about to find out more about the time with their mentor!
-
How long is each match?
As research finds that sustained contact enhances developmental relationships, mentors commit to a match relationship for one calendar school year.

What if I have questions?
We'd love to hear from you and offer support. If you have questions, contact your school counselor, school social worker or the Mentor Coordinator: Nicole McClain by email or phone at (317) 773-3171 ext. 10628
