• What is a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)?

The overall goal of the GSA is to create a supportive place for LGBTQ+ students and allies to gather, support each other, and collaborate to create a more inclusive community. Even if students do not identify within the LGBTQ+ spectrum, the group is intended to be a welcoming place to everyone.

The three typical functions of a GSA are:

    1. Social Support- This includes creating a nonjudgmental space for students to share experiences and get support from peers. This also includes creating a space for students to have fun, make friends, and connect with others.

    2. Create Change- Students will have opportunities to work together on projects to make change and improve our community. Research shows that when students engage in acts of service, it can improve academic outcomes as well as provide feelings of self-efficacy and resilience.

    3. Leadership- GSAs are student-driven. I, as the advisor, will be guiding activities and discussion but also seeking opportunities to get students involved in leading. Examples of activities the GSA will engage in: game nights, arts and crafts, movie night, learning about diverse historical figures, celebrating everyone’s uniqueness, and most importantly providing a safe and fun environment for everyone to be their true selves.

Meeting Information: We will meet in the LGI room after school from 3:45-4:45 pm twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month when school is in session. In the result of a snow day and school is canceled, GSA will also be canceled as well. Students should be picked up in the back of the school at door 8. NWMS provides a late bus for students who are unable to get other transportation on Thursday afternoon. You can sign up for the late bus from the weekly newsletter or on the NWMS website.
