• What is a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)?

The overall goal of the GSA is to create a supportive place for LGBTQ students and friends to gather, support each other, and collaborate to create a more inclusive community. Even if students do not identify as LGBTQ, everyone is welcome! The three typical functions of a GSA are:

    • Social Support- This includes creating a nonjudgmental space for students to share experiences and get support from peers. This also includes creating a space for students to have fun, make friends, and connect with others.
    • Create Change- Students will have opportunities to work together on projects to make change and improve our community. When students engage in acts of service, it can improve academic outcomes as well as provide feelings of self-efficacy and resilience.
    • Leadership- GSAs are student-driven. I, as the advisor, will be guiding activities and discussion but also seeking opportunities to get students involved in leading.

Examples of activities the GSA will engage in: game nights, discussions about coping with stress, discovering ways to improve our school, creating anti-bullying campaigns, learning about diverse historical figures, doing fundraising projects for causes of students’ choice, celebrating pride month, and more.
