• Meal Charging Policy

    Noblesville Schools' Nutrition and Food Services Department wants to ensure that every student has access to meals daily.  Per USDA guidelines, Noblesville Schools is not allowed to incur bad debt from unpaid meal charges.  We do recognize that there can be extenuating circumstances that may cause a student to not have money in their account, so a policy has been put in place to ensure students receive a courtesy light meal in these circumstances.  Additionally, if families need to apply for meal assistance, they can do so at any time throughout the school year.  In the event that a student does not have money to pay for a meal, the following limits are set as to how much a student can charge:

    When a student in grades K-5 does not have funds for their meals, they will be provided with a regular breakfast and/or lunch. The cost of these meals will be added to the student’s account.  Once an account reaches a negative balance equal to three meal charges (-$6.30 paid lunch/-$1.20 reduced lunch) the student will be offered a light breakfast consisting of granola bar and milk and a light lunch consisting of a deli sandwich, fruit and milk. These light meals will be offered at no charge to the student.  Students will not be allowed to charge a la carte items.

    When a student in grades 6-8 does not have funds for their meals, they will be provided with a regular breakfast and/or lunch.  The cost of these meals will be added to the student's account.  Once an account reaches a negative balance equal to two meal charges (-$4.70 paid lunch/-$.80 reduced lunch) the student will be offered a light breakfast consisting of a granola bar and milk and a light lunch consisting of a deli sandwich, fruit and milk.  These light meals will be offered at no charge to the student.  Students will not be allowed to charge a la carte items.

    Students in grades 9-12 does not have funds for their meals, they will be provided with a regular breakfast and/or lunch.  The cost of these meals will be added to the student's account.  Once an account reaches a negative balance equal to one meal charge (-$2.35 paid lunch/-$.40 reduced lunch) the student will be offered a light breakfast consisting of a granola bar and milk and a light lunch consisting of a deli sandwich, fruit and milk.  These light meals will be offered at no charge to the student.  Students will not be allowed to charge a la carte items.

    LOW BALANCE REMINDERS

    Students will be verbally reminded by the cashier to bring money in for their lunch account. Emails will go out on a regular basis when a student's account goes into the negative. Parents also have the option to sign up for low balance email reminders at K12PaymentCenter.  This service is provided at no cost to the parent. 

    The Education Service Center Nutrition & Food Services staff will call households when an account balance is greater than (-$15.00).

    COLLECTION OF UNPAID DEBT

    At the end of each school year, any active or inactive lunch accounts that are greater than (-$20.00) will be sent a final negative balance letter.  All collection efforts will be documented and kept on file by the Nutrition and Food Services Department.  If the debt is not paid to the Nutrition and Food Services Department within 30 days of the sent letter, the account will be zeroed out of the student’s lunch account and follow Board Policy 6151 Bad Checks and Uncollectable Debts.  A list of all accounts turned over to the Board will be kept on file by the Nutrition and Food Services Department.

    GRADUATED/WITHDRAWN STUDENT ACCOUNTS

    If a student leaves Noblesville Schools, a request for refund will be granted with a written request within 30 days of the end of the school year or 30 days after the date the student leaves the district. Parents also have the option to transfer a balance to a sibling or to a donation account. Refund Form

    ACTIVE RETURNING STUDENT ACCOUNTS

    Any positive or negative amount remaining in an active student’s lunch account at the end of the school year will be carried forward to the next school year and no refund will be made.
