What is the GED Test?
The General Educational Development (GED) Test, which began in 1942 with U.S. military personnel, provides adults with the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency credential. The test battery includes five tests, each measuring the major skills considered to be the outcome of a high school education. Because the tests are taken by adults who range in age from 18 to 90 throughout the United States and Canada, the tests focus on general skills and important concepts rather than on the ability to recall specific facts in a given area. Since the GED candidate frequently has acquired skills in a less formal manner than the average high school student, many of the test questions measure the general abilities to evaluate, analyze and draw conclusions. Most of the questions on the GED tests are multiple choice with five possible answers given. The questions range in difficulty from easy to hard and cover a wide range of subjects. The numbers of questions vary according to the test, as does the amount of time given to complete that test.
