Our District

The history of public education in Noblesville dates back to the mid-1800s when classes were held in log cabins and other small buildings.

According to Hamilton County Indiana, a history book published in 1915, the first school in Noblesville was conducted by R.L. Hannaman in a log cabin on the corner of Maple Avenue and Eighth Street. The construction of the school buildings in Noblesville began in the 1870s and continued through the end of the 19th century.

Construction started with the Seminary, the city's first high school, which was built along Tenth Street between Hannibal and Division streets. The property became known as Seminary Square and is now the site of Seminary Park. When the high school moved to a new location at 14th and Conner streets in 1900, the building became known as Second Ward School. It served as the city's junior high school with grades 7 and 8 and housed grade 1 for young students whose homes were located near the school. First Ward School was opened in 1888 and Third Ward School in 1892, both as elementary schools. First Ward was located at Tenth and Harrison streets on the same property that is now the site of North Elementary School. Third Ward was on the northwest corner of Tenth and Christian streets, now the site of a drugstore, bank, and other businesses. These four schools served the city of Noblesville for over half a century.

Children who lived in Noblesville Township but outside of Noblesville city limits attended one-room schoolhouses throughout the township for a number of years. These schools were replaced by the larger Federal Hill School and Wheeler School. Of those schools, Wheeler, located at Howe Road and SR 238, was the first of the two to close. It is a private residence today.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the city and township schools consolidated to create Noblesville Consolidated Schools, and in the early 1960s, the district reorganized as Noblesville Schools.

A gymnasium was added to the high school on Conner Street in 1923, but Noblesville's first new school since 1900 was Conner Elementary School. Built in 1951, Conner included a gymnasium and cafeteria, amenities the other schools did not have. Conner served the district as an elementary school until 1989. The building, still owned by the school corporation, is now known as Conner Learning Center. It houses the high school's alternative education program, Adult Basic Education classes, and the federal Headstart preschool program.

In 1955, a new Noblesville High School opened just north of Conner Elementary School. When the high school students moved to that location, the Conner Street building became a junior high school and Second Ward became an elementary school. The high school was expanded four times - in 1959, 1963, 1973, and 1984.

Forest Hill Elementary School was the next school to be built, opening in 1961 next to Forest Park and close to the old Federal Hill School on Lakeview Drive. It replaced Federal Hill School which later housed the Opportunity School for several years and then the school district's administration office.

North Elementary School opened in 1966 to replace First Ward School, and Stony Creek Elementary School opened in 1968 to replace the Second and Third Ward Schools.

A new Noblesville Junior High School also opened in 1968 to replace the school at 14th and Conner. The school, located at 16th Street and Field Drive, housed grades 7 and 8 until the late 1970s when sixth-grade classes began moving to the newly expanded facility. The move of grade 6 was made complete when the building's addition was completed in 1978. The school's name changed to Noblesville Middle School in 1993.

The building at 14th and Conner that had housed the high school originally and then the junior high school is now home to The Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville. The classroom section of the school was razed shortly after the junior high moved out.

The district administration office moved from the old Federal Hill School in 1978 to its current office on Field Drive.

Hinkle Creek Elementary School opened in 1980 and the neighboring Tri-County Opportunity School opened in 1981. Hazel Dell opened in 1989 and when that school opened, Conner closed as an elementary school.

The next new school in Noblesville came in 1996 with the opening of a new Noblesville High School on Cumberland Road. That opening brought about other changes in the school district as well. Grades 7 and 8 were moved to the old high school, grades 5 and 6 were brought together at the old middle school to create the new Noblesville Intermediate School, and the five elementary schools - Forest Hill, Hazel Dell, Hinkle Creek, North, and Stony Creek - became schools for children in kindergarten through grade 4.

A growing enrollment in the elementary grades brought the need for a sixth elementary school. Construction of White River began in 1997. The school opened for classes in 1999.

Since that time, North Elementary School has been extensively remodeled. A new media center, kindergarten classroom, and art classroom were opened in 2001. Noblesville Intermediate School also has been extensively remodeled and expanded with new classrooms, an expanded and updated media center, an additional computer lab, and new office space.

Several changes came about in 2007.

• A new home for Noblesville Intermediate School opened on Hague Road north of 196th Street. The school houses all of Noblesville's fifth-grade and sixth-grade students.

• The Noblesville High School Freshman Campus opened in the building at 16th Street and Field Drive. The NHS Main Campus houses grades 10-12.

• Noble Crossing Elementary School, Noblesville's seventh elementary school, opened. The school is located on Noble Crossing Parkway, just west of Hazel Dell Road north of 146th Street.

The school corporation owns additional pieces of property throughout Noblesville Township for future building projects as the need arises. The land includes:
• 70 acres on Howe Road north of 146th Street
• 103.6 acres on Hinkle Creek Road north of SR 38
• 38.67 acres on Mill Creek Road south of SR 32.
