Children at Hazel Dell Elementary School celebrate spring by dancing around the school’s maypole, reliving a tradition of days gone by. It was ten years ago that Hazel Dell brought this rite of spring to the school grounds and students have been welcoming spring by weaving colorful ribbons around the pole ever since. In 1998 sculptor and artist Joe LaMantia and art teacher Linda Green led students, along with parents, teachers, and volunteers from the community, through the process of designing, building, and erecting the maypole that sits in front of the school. Maypole dancing was a tradition years ago at three previous schools that served Noblesville Township and carried the Hazel Dell name.
